Matter and its Physical nature

Everything in this universe is said to be matter. The air we breathe, the food we eat, stones, even a particle of sand is matter. Matter is made up of particles, the size of those particles are even smaller than our imagination.

Characteristics of matter

(i) Particles of matter have space between them.

Example: Even after dissolving 50 gms of sugar in 100 ml of water, there is no rise in volume. This shows that particles of matter have space between them.

(ii) Particles of matter are constantly moving.

Example: When we light an incense stick in one corner of the room the fragrance is spread in the entire room.

(iii) Particles of matter are very very small beyond are imagination.

(iv) Particles of matter attract each other.

NOTE: Force of attraction is maximum in particles of solid and minimum in gaseous matter.
